What is the International Baccalaureate?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit educational organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. The IB offers educational programs for learners from age 3 to 19.

An IB education aims to prepare students to be international citizens and critical thinkers, while also having rigorous subject knowledge that will help them in college, university, or in the professional world.

In giving students from all over the world access to the same quality of education, the IB aims to make the world a better place, by producing IB students who are empathetic, have intercultural understanding, and are multilingual. The IB also conducts a large amount of research on educational outcomes.

History of the International Baccalaureate

The IB was started in the mid-1960s with the explicit aim of fostering world peace through a better educational system. The program was targeted at the new generation of diplomats and internationally mobile professionals who could now enroll their children in a globally standardized system of education. Initially, the IB started with the Diploma Program, with the MYP and PYP added later.

Programs Offered in IB

• Primary Years Program

This program is meant for learners in the 3-12 age group. The PYP focuses on holistic development through an inquiry-based framework.

• Middle Years Program

For 11-16-year-olds, the MYP is a five year program that introduces students to varied subject areas and asks them to connect their learning to the real world.

• Diploma Program

The flagship IBDP program is for high school students aged 16-19. It is a rigorous, multidisciplinary program that prepares students for college work.

• Career-Related Program

Also for students aged 16-19, this program aims to provide applicable career-related skills.
