A brief history

The history of Sorbonne University can be traced back to the 13th century when Robert de Sorbon, a theologian and chaplain to King Louis IX of France, established the College of Sorbonne in 1253. The college was intended to provide theological education to scholars and clergy. During the Renaissance, the College of Sorbonne gained prominence as a center of learning and scholarship. It became known for its theological teachings, philosophy, and humanities. The college’s reputation attracted students and scholars from across Europe, contributing to its intellectual influence. In 1970, the University of Paris, which included Sorbonne, was divided into multiple autonomous universities. This division aimed to decentralize higher education. This requirement is particularly crucial since the majority of our courses at Sorbonne University are conducted in French. Therefore, we strongly advise you to strengthen your French language skills before becoming a part of our academic community.

For students pursuing university-level courses within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities or the Faculty of Science & Engineering, a French fluency level of at least B2 or higher is typically expected. This proficiency level aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). It’s important to note that, in the Faculty of Medicine, a higher level of proficiency, specifically C1 according to the CEFRL, is mandatory for all degree programs.

If you find that your current language skills fall short of these requirements, Sorbonne University offers intensive language courses that you can enroll in to improve your French proficiency. These courses cater to the needs of international students at Sorbonne University, as well as international staff members seeking linguistic support. These classes are conducted on our campus and are designed to accommodate students’ schedules. The duration and intensity of the courses vary but are between 2 and 6 hours per week for one or two semesters and are determined by your initial language proficiency level, assessed through a mandatory online placement test.
