A brief history
Tohoku University, situated in Sendai, Japan, stands as a prestigious institution with a rich history. Established in 1907, it was the third Imperial University founded in Japan. The university’s roots trace back to its inception, where its significance emerged from the region’s independent global engagement. With its location beyond Tokyo’s core, Tohoku’s historical practice of conducting international affairs autonomously dates back almost four centuries. An emblematic instance was the diplomatic mission led by Tsunenaga Hasekura to Spain and the Vatican in 1613 under the Sendai Clan’s leadership, Masamune Date. This tradition was further nurtured when, in 1907, the Ministry of Education dispatched eight professors to Europe, primarily Germany, immersing them in the latest scientific and technological advancements.
