A Guide to Accommodation at KCL

A Guide to Accommodation at KCL

Welcome to the comprehensive guide to accommodation at King’s College London (KCL). Choosing the right accommodation is an essential part of your university experience, and this guide is designed to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision. Whether you’re a new student or a returning one, we understand the importance of finding a comfortable and convenient place to live during your time at KCL. From the various types of accommodation available to the application process and important considerations, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to secure the perfect home away from home.

How to Apply?

Step 1: Register Your Interest

To begin the accommodation process, you need to register your interest. This requires holding a Firm offer of study. During registration, you can also apply for the King’s Affordable Accommodation Scheme, mention any Additional Accommodation Requirements related to health conditions or disabilities, or declare recent care leaver status.

To register, use your King’s College London student ID number as your username and select ‘reset password.’ A temporary password will be sent to your registered email address. If you don’t know your ID number, refer to the offer letter received via email.

Step 2: Receive an Invite

Within two weeks of registration, you will receive an invitation email containing a designated date and time to access the accommodation portal for room bookings. If you applied for the King’s Affordable Accommodation Scheme or Additional Accommodation Requirements, the review process may require additional time. The outcome of your KAAS application will be included in the invitation email, and for AAR, you may be contacted for further discussion.

For applicants under 18 years old at the time of arrival, check important notes below.

Step 3: Book Your Room

Once you have access to the portal, you can choose from various criteria such as budget or room type and check availability across different residences. You have the freedom to select the specific room you prefer. The portal allows you to view the age and gender of other residents in your chosen flat, aiding your decision-making process.

Step 4: Sign Your Contract & Make Your Pre-Payment

Before signing your license agreement (contract), ensure thorough reading as it is legally binding. After acceptance, a confirmation email will be sent with a PDF attachment of your License Agreement. Please check your spam/junk folder if you do not receive this email.

While you can make changes to your booking later, it is subject to availability and can only be done once.

To secure your room, a rent prepayment of £450 is required, which will be deducted from the first rent installment due in October 2023. If approved for the King’s Affordable Accommodation Scheme (KAAS), no pre-payment is necessary. Once this step is complete, you’re finished!

Important Notes

Study Abroad Students

Booking accommodations as a Study Abroad Student involves some differences. New Study Abroad students arriving in September or January follow a similar process to postgraduates, registering and gaining instant access to the accommodation portal.

The £450 pre-payment of rent is not required for Study Abroad students. However, room availability is limited and not guaranteed.

Outbound Study Abroad students who arrive in September and leave in January can have their contract adjusted by providing evidence of their study abroad program by November. A £450 pre-payment is necessary to secure the booking.

Students Under 18

Bookings from students under 18 years old are accepted, provided their 18th birthday falls after the contract’s start date. Students under 16 years old cannot be accommodated.

The available properties for students under 18 are Great Dover Street Apartments and Stamford Street Apartments, directly owned and managed by King’s College London. During application, you can express your preference, and allocation into one of these residences will be done manually.

Please note that the specific room number will not be communicated until arrival. As you will not have reached 18 years old when the Licence Agreement (contract) is generated, details of a parent/guardian/responsible adult will be required as a co-signatory.

Accommodation in Halls is offered under the assumption that students are self-sufficient, capable of independent living, and can handle practical matters away from home.

King’s Affordable Accommodation Scheme (KAAS)

The King’s Affordable Accommodation Scheme (KAAS) offered by the university provides undergraduate students with access to accommodation priced below market levels, subject to meeting specific eligibility criteria outlined on this page. Invitations will be sent to successful applicants, guiding them on the next steps. KAAS spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis until all available spaces have been assigned.

Students approved for KAAS will not be required to make the £450 advance payment of rent to secure their room.

If you are a returning student, a new KAAS application must be submitted for each year of accommodation, and it is important to note that the outcome is not guaranteed to remain the same.

KAAS Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for KAAS, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Full-time undergraduate student, either first-year or returning in the 22/23 academic year
  • Household income below £42,875 per annum (more information on household income and student funding can be found here)
  • Submission of a statement explaining the reasons for requesting a KAAS room
  • Applications submitted without this required information will not be considered.

KAAS Rooms Application Process

A limited quota of KAAS rooms is available in the following properties:

  • Stamford Street Apartments
  • Great Dover Street Apartments
  • Wolfson House

Note that the following properties are not included in the KAAS scheme:

  • City

It is important to be aware that documentation may be required to support your KAAS application. Applicants will have one week from the day of receiving an invitation to secure their accommodation. Failure to book a KAAS room within this timeframe will result in the withdrawal of the KAAS offer, and the applicant will be asked to book a room at the published rate.
