Promoting International Mindedness in Education

How IB Learner Profile Traits Promote International Mindedness in Education

A rising popular alternative to the curriculums in India is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). One of the main reasons students undertake the IBDP is due to the increasing recognition of the curriculum over the past few years.

Additionally, the top international schools provide it. As parents would like to provide the best education to their children to pave a bright future ahead of them, they tend to opt for the IBDP.

International Mindedness in education is a phrase that educational institutions across the world are now emphasizing to its students. So, what exactly is International Mindedness? In short, it’s the quality which enables individuals to analyze, adapt and communicate in a variety of environments and situations.

The quality possesses more potential than meets the eye. In terms of education, international mindedness in education can assist students primarily in communication. Communication is essential in most, if not, all aspects of education as proper communication and interactions will provide better understanding and appropriate responses to different situations in the present and future.

The IB learner profile consists of numerous attributes that its students will gain throughout their respective IB programs. It is a profile that was created based on its rigorous curriculum in order to prepare its students for future situations including communicating with an individual from another society. As it states:

The profile aims to develop learners who are:

  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Thinkers
  • Communicators
  • Principled
  • Open-minded
  • Caring
  • Risk-takers
  • Balanced
  • Reflective

How would the IB learner profile promote international-mindedness in education? The attributes of the profile are mainly targeted in improving international-mindedness as it motivates students to explore different situations.

With individuals encountering different people, cultures and religions, they tend to realize that other individuals and communities will possess different opinions.

Ethos, along with pathos and logos, is an important Greek word that is taught during the IB curriculum and this concept is then implemented in other activities of the curriculum as it contributes to international mindedness by making students realize that different societies possess their own ideals.

Through analysis and inquiry, an individual will learn and consider the circumstances that others are currently encountering.

As a result, an individual will accept that other people can also be correct and that people are allowed to possess their own beliefs.

The IB also allows students to be internationally minded through one of its core components— CAS. Alongside their academics, students take part in various other extra-curricular activities of three strands. Creativity involves the arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.

Activity focuses on enhancing the students’ lifestyle— whether it be playing a sport or going hiking. Lastly, service involves a voluntary participation that has learning benefits for the students.

One of the examples of CAS that contributes to promoting international mindedness among its students is attending Model United Nations. Students are provided with the opportunity to tackle global problems while representing a country and learning from others.

Furthermore, students are encouraged to participate in various cultural activities that the school may or may not conduct. IB students learn to become global citizens

Students are able to successfully recognize and learn to take pride in their place in a globalized world by taking up additional languages, learning about various cultures around the world and through other incorporations of international mindedness into the outward-facing course.

Additionally, the IB provides an interdisciplinary education that allows the students to develop into internationally-minded individuals.
