Credits

The International Summer School is worth 10 credits in the UK system. 10 credits is equivalent to 5 ECTS in the European system or 3 credits in the US system.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Manchester International Summer School, please meet the following criteria

  • Age You should be 18 years or older on the first day of the course.
  • Enrollment You must be a registered undergraduate student at a tertiary institution, such as a university or college. We also welcome mature students, postgraduates, and recent graduates to apply.
  • Academic Performance Good academic grades are expected, equivalent to a GPA of 3.0. If you are unsure about the grading scale at your home institution, please reach out to us for clarification.

English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you must meet one of the following English language requirements

  • Studying in English You are currently studying at an institution where English is the medium of instruction.
  • IELTS A minimum score of 6.5 (or equivalent) in the IELTS test, with at least 6.0 in each skill.
  • TOEFL A minimum score of 583 in the paper-based test, 93 in the internet-based test, or 213 in the computer-based test. Minimum scores of 53, 20, and 400, respectively, are required in each skill.
  • English Language Qualifications Accepted qualifications include English O-level/IGCSE/GCSE grade C, International Baccalaureate Standard Level English grade 4, Cambridge Advanced Certificate grade B, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English grade C, CET-4 (China) minimum score of 493, CET-6 (China) minimum score of 400, TEM-4 minimum score of 70, and TOEIC minimum combined score of 850 for Listening and Reading.
  • Transcripts and Scores Ensure that all transcripts are authorized by your university, and your English language scores are presented clearly in English and no more than two years old.

Please note that the University accepts other forms of English language qualification. If your English language proficiency falls below the required level, we will assess your personal statement and may request an additional sample of your written English.

Fees

Tuition Fee

The exact tuition fee is not currently available on the website. This fee includes the cost of teaching, assessment, field trips, airport collection, and selected social activities.

Group Discount

If you are part of a group with more than 10 students from the same institution, we are pleased to offer a 10% group discount on the tuition fee.

Accommodation Fee

The accommodation fees, covering standard or en-suite self-catering rooms for the three residential weeks, will be confirmed in January 2022. For further details, please refer to the Accommodation page.

Personal Expenses

Additionally, it is essential to budget for personal living expenses, including food, travel, and other personal costs. Manchester is known to be a relatively affordable city to live in. Cooking meals at home is typically less expensive than eating out, and all accommodations provide cooking facilities. On average, a weekly grocery shopping can range from £30 to £50.

Insurance

Before arriving in Manchester, all students must arrange their own travel and health insurance coverage.

Refund Policy

If, for any reason, a student is unable to attend the Manchester International Summer School, please notify us as soon as possible. Depending on the circumstances and advance notice, a refund or partial refund of fees may be possible. However, please note that accommodation fees may not be refundable after the summer school’s start date.

Scholarships

MISS provides scholarships to full-time undergraduate students enrolled at universities in specific countries, such as the USA and Australia. These scholarships will be granted to individuals who exhibit exceptional academic performance in their undergraduate studies and submit outstanding applications. There is no need to submit a separate scholarship application, as decisions will be made based on the received applications.

Eligibility for Scholarships

Students applying for a scholarship must meet the entry requirements before submitting their application. It is important to note that recipients of the scholarship will be responsible for their accommodation, travel, and other expenses during their stay in Manchester.

How to Apply

Before Applying

  • Familiarize yourself with the course content and entry requirements prior to submitting your application.
  • Ensure that your application includes the following documents
    • Academic transcript from your current university.
    • Proof of English language qualification, such as IELTS or TOEFL scores.
    • Completed application form (download available by clicking here).
  • Failure to include all the required documentation may result in a delay in processing your application. Refer to our Entry Requirements for detailed information.

Submitting Applications

  • All applications and accompanying documents should be emailed to international.summerschool@manchester.ac.uk.
  • Applications are reviewed in the order they are submitted. Please note that applications received after the deadline may not be successful, and students may not receive their first choice of classes.

Admission Process

  • All correspondence regarding your application will be conducted via email, so please check your inbox regularly.
  • Within two days of submitting your application, you will receive an acknowledgement email.
  • If you are offered a conditional place, you will receive a letter outlining the necessary steps to proceed.
  • Your place in the summer school will be confirmed only after full payment of course fees. Payment can be made online through our store using a credit or debit card. The payment deadline will be provided upon confirmation of your application.
  • Accommodation fees will also be due at this point.
  • Once full payment is received, an unconditional offer letter will be issued and sent via email (unless a paper copy is requested).
  • Successful students will receive further course-related information before the program commences.

Visa Requirements

  • Not all students require a visa to enter the UK. You can check your eligibility on the Home Office website.
  • If a visa is required, it will typically be a Short-Term Study Visa for visits to the UK lasting less than six months and including study activities. This visa is different from a Tier 4 (General) student visa, which requires a CAS number.
  • Upon receiving an unconditional offer letter, you can utilize it for your visa application.

Accommodation

  • Standard accommodation is offered at Whitworth Park, while en-suite accommodation is available at Denmark Road.
  • Both options provide a choice between standard or en-suite rooms located near the teaching facilities.
  • All rooms are private (no sharing) and are organized into self-catering apartments that include a shared living room and kitchen.
  • The accommodation fee covers cooking equipment, weekly cleaning services, and fresh bed sheets.
  • Wireless internet is accessible on campus for university students, but some bedrooms may have a wired broadband connection, so it is recommended to bring a laptop for cable connectivity.
  • The University of Manchester Library offers study spaces and computers for student use.
  • Room allocations aim to create diverse flat compositions, fostering an international experience, which means you may not be placed with students from your home university.
  • The university campus is open to the public but monitored by campus security.
