A brief history

The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) is a renowned public research university in Munich, Germany. It was established in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut in Ingolstadt, with approval from the Pope. In 1800, due to the threat of French invasion, King Maximilian I of Bavaria moved the university to Landshut, and later in 1826, King Ludwig I of Bavaria relocated it to Munich. LMU has a rich 550-year history reflecting Europe’s changing tides. It has grown over time, adding new faculties and research centers. With a legacy of 42 Nobel laureates as of 2017, LMU is recognized as a premier European academic and research hub.
