A brief history

McGill University was founded in 1821 by James McGill, a Scottish merchant. The university has been home to momentous firsts thanks to brilliant and curious minds. The university grounds were the birthplace of basketball and hockey. This is where Archie, the world’s first internet search engine, was created, and where Canada’s first female professor taught.

General information

The university comprises ten faculties and schools, including agriculture and environmental sciences, arts, dentistry, education, engineering, law, management, medicine, music, and science, offering approximately 300 study programs. A majority of the students, roughly two-thirds, are pursuing undergraduate degrees. International students face higher tuition fees, and McGill University follows a semester-based academic calendar. The institution has affiliations with several teaching hospitals, with its medical school being the oldest in Canada.
